On Friday 16th October, whilst moving a school shed, a mother hedgehog and her babies were discovered in their nest.
Hettie’s Helpers (local hedgehog rescue) were called in and the hedgehogs were taken away and settled in to their very own ‘Hedgehog Hotel’.
Hettie’s have reported that the babies were about 4 weeks old and a good size. They will stay with their mother for about another week before she is released. The babies will then be monitored until they reach a good hibernation weight of 650g and if the weather remains mild, they will also be released. However, if we start to get frosty weather, the babies will be kept together until the spring.
DID YOU KNOW?
Hedgehogs have sadly just been added to the list of vulnerable to extinction animals. Nicola and Kevin Croucher set up Hettie’s Helpers in 2015 to raise awareness and to rescue, rehabilitate and release vulnerable, sick or injured hedgehogs.
